What is CrossFit?
Basically CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program developed in America back in the late 90’s.
It was defined by its founders as: Constantly Varied, Functional Movements (such as Pushing, Pulling, Running, Squatting, Lifting, Jumping etc) performed at high intensity. It includes Olympic lifting, Gymnastics, Rowing, Kettlebells, and strongman aspects to name a few.
CrossFit encourages people to be fit in all ten of its general physical skills:
This constantly varied training prepares you for the unknown and unexpected and every move you learn is transferable into everyday life. For example; a deadlift could be picking your child up from the floor or a squat helps you get on and off your chair easier, that sort of thing.
CrossFit is for everybody: Elite athletes or your gran & grandad. The great thing is that it is universally scalable, everyone works at a weight and intensity relevant to them.
Even if you are trained in another sport, CrossFit will only help enhance this. Why be good at just one specialized sport when you can be good at pretty much everything? CrossFit’s speciality is not specializing in one thing but a huge variety to make you an all-round healthier, leaner, fitter, faster, flexible and stronger person, this also keeps training interesting and enjoyable.
Each time you come to a session you can leave your worries behind, you don’t have to programme your own session as you all join in the same WOD (workout of the day) and the coaches are there to guide you each step of the way. Whatever you want from your training the Coaches are there to help you achieve these goals, whether that be to compete in CrossFit Competitions as an athlete or just to be able to walk up the stairs without getting out of breath.
Without doubt though, the best thing about CrossFit is the community spirit. This sense of community and competitive camaraderie is not found anywhere else. this is what makes crossfit special.
You are all doing the same WOD (workout of the day), so you all know what the others are going through and aiming for so can relate to each other and spur each other on. It’s not about who has the biggest muscles or who has the fastest time on the board, it’s about pushing each other to do well, and chasing the person in front to make you a better athlete or just giving a shout of encouragement when someone is struggling to complete the WOD. It’s the high five’s at the end of each session and talking about how tough it was that makes you want more!
